THE EFFECTIVE AFTERCARE OF SUITS AND STYLING ADVICE
A
man’s suit is like his armour, his guardian and also serves as a badge of honour
in the corporate world. We live in a time where men need to be very careful
with how they dress and at what events they attend because they can be
perceived in many different ways by the audience that each event draws.
In
the fashion world, a formal suit is considered as a benchmark for style
and elegance. And in truth, there is no outfit more classic than the mode of a
suit and tie. However, despite its ubiquity in modern society, very few know
how to properly maintain their suit — or how to store it away when not in use.
If
you learn how to store a suit, you can go a long way towards keeping your
investments looking new.
BEFORE
STORAGE
Before
you put away your suit, make sure that it is clean!
· If you got food stain,
dirt, or dust on your suit, take care of it before you put it away. A lint
roller or suit brush can be used to take off any dust or dirt away from the
suit. Food stains can be cleaned at home or you can take help from your local
dry cleaner. Also, creases (if any) should be dealt with immediately. A
dry cleaner can straighten them or you can try to get rid of them with a
steamer. Remember, not to iron them out as you will only end up damaging your
suit.
·
For most of us, it might
be tempting to put our suit away without worrying about cleaning it until we need
it again. But this is never a good idea. The longer you leave a stain on a
fabric, the more likely it is to get permanent. The stains that could be taken
out now, might develop permanently in a month, a week, or even a day from
now. So, it is crucial to deal with stains as soon as they arise.
·
Moths and other pests are
more likely to attack a dirty suit. Therefore, cleaning it before you put it
away will lessen the chances of a moth destroying your suit. A moth will chew
through any of your suits. But they are more likely to go after the ones with
stains or oils on them. However, a spotless suit is no guarantee that the moths
will not destroy your expensive garments. To protect them completely, you need
to make a little more efforts- a cedar closet.
HANGING THE GARMENTS
·
A
suit needs to be hung on a hanger after each wearing. As it ensures the suit
maintain its original shape and helps the fibres to go back to the original
shape- reducing wrinkles. It is advisable to use wooden hangers that are at
least 2 inches wide from the shoulder area. It is even better to use hangers
with some width in the shoulder because you want them to support the shoulder
pads. It reduces the chances of deforming the shoulder of your jacket. Always
remember to hang your suit in a well-ventilated area- free from excessive
moisture, dust, and direct sunlight.
·
Fold
or hang the shirts from a hanger. Button the collar to uphold its shape and
another button down the shirt to keep them from falling around.
·
Use
clamp hangers to clamp the hem of your trousers. It helps wrinkles to fall out.
Belts can be rolled or hung from their buckles.
· If you have a well-built closet, stack your rolled ties in those shallow drawers with dividers appropriate for them. If not, you can use a tie hanger.
·
You
can hang your pocket squares with clips on a rotating rack, or you can simply
fold them.
Suit storage isn't that complicated. The know-how to store a suit is crucial for suit possession. If you follow the tips mentioned above, you can add much life to your garments. It will help you to keep them looking new for years to come.
